#228; to battle seasonal affective disorder (SAD)

30days2011 wordpress

I love the idea of BATTLING THE SAD (by SAD, of course, I mean seasonal affective disorder, but it still sounds pretty great) and in this sudden turn for the grey, dismal, and freezing here in Boston (seriously, Labor Day hit and it was like the actual, physical end of summer instead of the arbitrary, social end) I seem to be surrounded by SAD (my own included). But SAD is not what we do here at The Luckiest, we do the opposite, and so in my effort to BATTLE THE SAD (I swear, every time I write/read that in caps, it’s He-Man shouting it), I bring you ways to carry a little sunshine and attitude around with you (inspired by the Tips of the Week Wednesday over at The Happiness Project).

↳ I cannot help but hit up tumblr when I’m feeling emo (and no, I’m not secretly fifteen years old). Something about being curled up cozy, checking out awesome homemade art and fell0w Harry Potter obsessed crazies just cheers me up. And if that doesn’t work? I can always take my mind off the SAD by practicing some graphic design of my own. Also, reading celeb sighting sites (Just Jared and GoFugYourself being my favorites) or advice columns (you should all be reading Dear Wendy, she’s brilliant and fun).

↳ It sounds silly, but spending a rainy afternoon watching Family Guy/Archer/The Simpsons/Bob’s Burgers/American Dad (so many silly-fantastic cartoons out there these days!) re-runs always does the trick. Hulu is a beautiful thing. If cartoons aren’t your thing, youtube some =3 or old school Steve Martin stand up.

↳ Putting my favorite Broadway/show-tunes on, loud, and dancing around our bedroom singing along. Uh, yeah. This. (You can’t be in a bad mood singing La Vie Boheme or You Gotta Get a Gimmick).

↳ Going for a run. Or, if I’m at work, I hit one of the back stairwells and run up and down a few flights of stairs. It gets my blood pumping, warms me up (I’m a cold person, nearly always), wakes me up, and gets me out of my desk chair for a few minutes!

↳ Call a long distance friend. Someone you have hilarious inside jokes with and haven’t seen in months (someone who’s voice makes you grin, because it’s not the same via facebook!). Get some belly-holding, rolling on the floor laughing in rehashing ridiculous nights out, catching up on the insanity of your current lives, and remind yourself that there are people out there who love you, and whom you love. I can’t imagine feeling blue when that’s at the forefront of my mind.

Tell me: What do you do to BATTLE THE SAD?

#102; rain, rain, go away

The last few days have not been among my best. Have you ever fallen up stairs? It’s a little bit like catching your face on a cement curb, except with more momentum. Saturday I tripped and woke up Sunday morning with (my very first!) black eye, a split lip, a slight head injury, and a possibly broken left cheekbone. I spent yesterday very emotionally attached to an ice pack, and spent today’s rainy, cold excuse for a Spring day at the emergency room. I got my very first CT Scan! More firsts, yay!

So not only have the last few days been horribly chilly and rainy and gray, but I have literally been in and out of the ER. Perhaps tonight I’m a little on the cranky side. But hey, my face is fine (the CT was clean, woohoo!) and the Twitter & FB traffic was pretty hilarious throughout the entire ordeal. My favorites? How kind of you to ask… My favorite (aka, the funny ones) responses to various photos of my mangled face over the last two days in the Twitter-verse…

  • From @tscottyd: One things for certain no one will mess w/ you for a looooong time. You’re looking like YOU just knocked out Pachiao.
  • From @dcfisch: dear god you look swollen.
  • From a fellow Derby regular: her and the ground didn;t agree on something it looks like ;)
  • From a buddy from The Vagina Monologues: the hell?
  • From The Vagina Monologues‘ producer: Gah! I’m sure the other guy looks much worse.
  • From @emilycrockett: Oh honey!!!!! Lemme kiss it and make it better.
  • From @bp1222: Stairs: 1, Limbo: 0.
  • From @captaincourage: u poor little thing. That may be the most pathetic pic I’ve ever seen.

Of course, there was twice as much encouragement and offers to help me out than there were jokes, but the laughter (while painful considering how much you use your face when laughing!) was much needed and appreciated. Hope that your week has started off better than mine, and I’ll be back in sunnier days (and a much warmer mood, I’m sure) soon!

#081; she’s a little bit dizzy these days…

Let’s see, Limbo’s had her head in the clouds as of late, but I’m working on bringing my feet back to solid ground and diving in head long (without the aid of my usual dose of 1+pack of nicotine a day, thanks to a new round of bronchitis and strict instructions that my “trying to quite smoking” must become “have already quit” as soon as is humanly possible).

In the meantime: couple of things I’m currently obsessed with and something new & exciting in the works!

  • DC’s comedy set has a new kid on the block to check out for. Well, 10 of them, to be more specific. In the best showcase I’ve seen in DC in ages, Recessions has opened it’s doors on Wednesday nights to WayneMan comedy and his rotating group of local and national stand up comics, ComedyX10. New faces – local radio personalities – and standards (Seaton Smith showed up last minute and brought the house down with some of the best bits I’ve seen him do, and I’ve seen him probably half a dozen times now). The crowd was thick, rolling along with every punch the ten (12, actually, for the first night) were throwing and by the end of the night, the DJ taking over, we couldn’t believe it was nearly 11. ComedyX10 is back this week, Wednesday 8-10pm (free admission) and with great food and drink hitting just the right mix of sit-down show/hopping bar, so be sure to check it out.
  • Umm… The Coachella line-up was announced. Please say someone wants to do a ridiculous road-trip/vacation/something/anything to get us East coast peeps out there for this three day festival of AWESOME. Tickets go on sale this week, I feel an early Feb purchase coming on… is anyone in?
  • Coming up at At Limbo we’re going to be releasing (exclusively! How cool is that?!) Adrian Hardkor Krygowski’s cover of the Pinky & the Brain theme song from this month’s Spelling for Bees Collective at Velvet Lounge. Adrian took the slightly creepy song and gave it a ‘hardkor’ (haha) make-over, turning out what seemed to be the favorite Saturday Morning Cartoon theme song of the week (SfB’s theme for January, naturally).

Okay, that’s it for me this lunch break, at least I got this much together, right?! Really would love suggestions for concentration, online to do lists, and any other “let’s get Limbo through yet another week of being sick and miserable” tricks and treats you might have! This afternoon I’ll have up a preview of IOTA’s massive Haiti relief benefit concert with such At Limbo favorites (plus at least a dozen others!) as Rene Moffatt, Derek Evry, and No Second Troy.
